Melatonin is produced by various body tissues, but mainly from the pineal gland with a clear daily rhythmic cycle, peaking during the night. Once made, it then flows into the blood stream.
Night-time melatonin levels should be at least 10 times higher than during the day. But this isn’t always the case. Night-time is detected by less light entering the eyes. This then send a message to the pineal gland that darkness has come.

Once melatonin secretion is disrupted, it will not only affect sleep, but also the balance of your hormones in general too. So, in the short run, it may only affect sleep, but in the long run, it will have a detrimental effect on health itself.
